Magicians CAN do the Impossible
David Copperfield vanished the Statue of Liberty on national television; David Blain held his breath under water for eight minutes; Criss Angel demonstrated his ability to walk on water. Now, as an encore, magicians of the world have their eyes focused on Austin, Texas.
The prediction is . . . Austin will be re-branded as ‘The Live Music and MAGIC Capital of the World.’ Magicians from around the world are working together to build a world-class Magic Center located in Austin. This multi-million dollar project is the brainchild of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.).
The vision of this future facility is to include the best museum of magic in the world, a magnificent research library, performing arts theatre, gift and magic trick store, and the world-wide headquarters of the S.A.M.
The Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) was founded in 1902 in New York, and has become a worldwide organization dedicated to the wonderful world of magic. The Society actively supports the advancement of the magical arts through the S.A.M. Magic Endowment Fund, the Houdini Fund, the Society of Young Magicians (S.Y.M.), the Magic Center Foundation and other unique programs. Houdini himself, the greatest showman the world of magic has ever known, served as National President of the S.A.M. from 1917 until his untimely death in 1926.
Open, Sesame!
The S.A.M. Magic Center Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation with the purpose of promoting magic by developing a world-class magic center for the benefit of the Society of American Magicians and magic enthusiasts from around the world. In March of this year, the Foundation officially opened its new office at 2705 Bee Caves Road, Suite 230, in Austin. A ribbon cutting-ceremony on March 18th was celebrated by an overflow crowd of Austin dignitaries, S.A.M. officials, and magicians from throughout Texas, and as far away as Branson, Missouri and Las Vegas, Nevada. Media representatives included KLRU-TV and the Westlake Picayune and M-U-M Magazine, the official organ of the Society of American Magicians.
Currently, the Foundation is looking throughout the Austin area for a suitable location to build this unique facility. Until significant funding benchmarks are met and a suitable location is selected, the Foundation office will continue to house a small museum of magic, research library, and stage. These are features of what the S.A.M. Magic Center could be, only on a much smaller scale.
One major feature of the future Magic Center will be to honor the great names of magic of the past and present, including Houdini, Keller, Thurston, Carter, Devant, Cardini, Harry Blackstone, Mark Wilson, David Copperfield, Criss Angel, David Blain, Siegfried and Roy, and Lance Burton. We envision featuring a spectacular audio/visual presentation honoring their performance and actual magic props used in each of their acts. Unlike other magic museums that are closed to the general public, the S.A.M. Magic Center will be open to the public and will certainly become a ‘must-see’ tourist attraction when visiting Austin.
